Finding a Responsible Dog Breeder

We want to educate people in their search for the perfect companion. When you go out on the internet and start looking for a puppy, keep this list in mind. If the breeder doesn’t meet the criteria listed here I would be leery of buying a puppy from them.

Breeding dogs are friendly and don’t shy away from visitors

Their dogs are not kept in over crowded spaces, they have plenty of room for exercise and get daily interaction with the family/breeder.

May not always have puppies available but keeps a waiting list of interested potential buyers.

Meets psychological and physical needs of their dogs by providing toys and enrichment items.

Has a strong relationship with their vet. Allows you to contact their vet.

Really knows their breed and is willing to educate and guide potential puppy families.

Has references from previous puppy families.

Knows their parent dogs personalities and each puppies’ personality.

Health tests their dogs.

Not all breeders these days allow visitors on their property for their families’, breeding dogs and puppies’ protection, but they should at least be willing FaceTime or video chat with you.

Willing to take puppy back if family is no longer able to keep the puppy.

A responsible dog breeder will sometimes want to ask you questions about your situation, why you want a puppy, what you’re looking for in a puppy.

Will have a contract and or health guarantee that protects you, the breeder and the puppy.
